Scottish brass basket hilted sword, brass basket of design the 1798 Pattern Basket Hilted Sword, pattern swords were usually based on previous used designs, this having incised line decoration, the basket with traces of original gilding, this sword was made for a LEFT HANDED OFFICER the basket being slightly more generous on the left hand side to accomodate the knuckles, fish skin grip with original wire binding, wide double edged (probably German) blade 865mm long, 48mm wide at hilt with double fullers for the length of the blade. The 1798 Pattern sword usually had a Runkel blade and it could be argued this sword is actually of the 1798 Pattern with a family blade. It is my opinion they would not have manufactured a sword for the left hand. This and the use of a non pattern blade would indicate pre pattern manufacture. Interpretation is in the hands of the individual.p>
